Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Financial Update

Earlier in the year it was reported to you that the cost of heating the church was excessive. Thermostats were lowered resulting in a substantial savings in heating costs. We apologize for any inconvenience that it may have caused you. The cost to heat the church in Fiscal Year 2008 through the month of March has amounted to $14,335. The budget for the year is $12,000.

The offertory collection for the weekend of April 26/27 was $10,378.00. Thank you for your gifts.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 11th, we will celebrate Mass at 10 a.m. instead of having a 9:00 a.m. and an 11:00 a.m. Mass so we can join members of the Community United Methodist Church for a prayer service. We invite everyone to wear something red to Mass and, if possible, bring a baked good to share during fellowship after the service. Please join us at the end of Mass as we process as a group to the Hannah Williams playground gazebo for the prayer service. A brief reception will follow the service. In case of rain, we will hold our service in St. Zepherin’s Parish Center.

Mother’s Day Birthright Carnations

The Mother’s Day Carnation Project is the primary fundraising event held by Birthright of Framingham. The Birthright center is staffed entirely by volunteers who offer friendship, emotional support, and practical assistance to women in a crisis pregnancy. Birthright does not charge for its services, but relies on donations from generous supporters to continue helping pregnant women in need. Your support is deeply appreciated. Checks may be made out to Birthright of Framingham, 971 Concord Street, Framingham 01701. Suggested donation is $2.00 per flower but any and all contributions are gratefully accepted. Carnations will be on sale here at St. Zepherin’s after all Masses the weekend of May 11th. Please be as generous as your means allow. This is a very worthwhile project.

Music Ministry

First Communions are an exciting time of year in so many ways. First Communions may take us back to our youth as we remember what it was like the first time, and they’re also a reminder that we should always keep that childlike innocence and excitement in mind in our faith and in all aspects of our life.

With family and friends coming from other parts of the country, First Communions are a challenge to musicians as we attempt to find music that is familiar to all who are there; it may be an impossible task, but we do the best we can! Music is a common language, yet as Roman Catholics we are still building a common musical repertoire. Working to find and build that repertoire is something to keep in mind as the two parishes in Wayland come together in ever increasing ways.

The adult choir will be singing again for Pentecost which is the weekend of May 10/11. We would welcome new members to come and sing. Our next rehearsal is this Tuesday, May 6, at 7 pm in the church. Singing is a great way to become more involved in the parish, meet people, have fun, and help lead music at Mass.

See you in church! Kirk Hartung, Director of Music Ministry

Religious Education Grades K - 5

Registration forms for next year’s family religious education program have been mailed out to all families. Please return them ASAP. Thank you.

If you did not receive a registration form or you have a child who would be new to our program, you may pick one up at the center or call Marcia at the rectory to get one. All children must attend a Grade one program before they can enter their First Eucharist year.

Anyone who would be interested in volunteering in our Family Religious Education program may also get a form at the center or rectory. We need you, the children need you! It would be a once a month hour commitment from September through April. All lesson plans and materials are provided for your instruction. It is rewarding and enriching.

First Eucharist Children - All Gold Books should be completed by the child’s First Communion date where they will be presented during Mass.

Adult Faith Formation

Arise Renew International presents Arise Together In Christ, a parish-centered process of spiritual renewal. Our Parish will take part in this Process which will begin in the Fall of 2008.

The spiritual path laid out by the Arise process guides participants, who meet in small faith groups, through five distinct Seasons each of which lasts six weeks. Each Season engages the entire parish in a basic Gospel theme.

A core implementation team has been formed in our parish. The present members are Ann and Tom Lally, Sally DeGeorge, Marge O’Day, Brenda Whitenett, Paul Connolly, Joanne Berry, and Monica Leonard.  They have already attended several workshops in preparation to implement Arise at St. Zepherin’s.  Please watch upcoming bulletins, newsletters and our parish website for the particulars as our starting date draws near. For more information about the Arise Process, please contact Marjory O’Day, Pastoral Associate, or any of the core team members.

Bible Reflection - Please contact Marjory O’Day at the rectory if you are interested in participating in a six week morning Bible Reflection Group starting Monday May 5. The theme is Amos/ Hosea/ Micah: A Call to Justice. The format is based on the Bible study guides from Loyola Press that have been used at St. Zepherin previously. Sessions will be used on successive Mondays at 9:45 (but skipping the Memorial Day holiday). Please indicate when you call if you want to order a personal copy of the study guide. Presently, the group will meet at the Parish Center unless group members decide to hold the sessions in a home.

Parish Ministry

First Eucharist children will be receiving their First Communion at the following Mass: May 10 at 4pm.

Appreciation Party

Last Saturday St. Zepherin’s Parish celebrated the giving of time and talent with our 275 active volunteers. It was a wonderful time to socialize and talk with each other and meet our new Pastor, Father Jim Laughlin. We celebrated the active participation that makes St. Zepherin’s a wonderful Catholic community, a parish where we respect each other’s talent and skills to help make our parish strong. Father Ron gave out 13 awards for exceptional parish commitment this year. The award winners were: Bob Ouellette, Ann Lally, Elinor Robinson, Fr. Jack Mandile, Jeanne Stanton, Ben Boegehold, Michael Monte, Jody Pongratz, Teresa Heerema, Betsy Meindl, Kelly LaPierre, Patty Fargnoli. Over the next few weeks in the bulletin, we will introduce each of these generous parishioners.

St. Zepherin’s is always looking for new people to share their talents. Volunteering helps us to know each other better

and develop a stronger community. On the website www.stzepherin.org parishioners can find the different ministries that are offered presently at our parish. We encourage every adult and teenager to be involved in one or more of our ministries.

Many thanks to Joyce Pinney, Mary Ellen Siudut, Peggy Coons and Pat Hughes for organizing this celebration.

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1LIVING EXIT

“No one leaves this world alive, that’s for sure,” one of the chorus members in the Northampton group “Young at Heart” says in a documentary about them currently in a few smaller theaters. The documentary follows their seven weeks (plus Easter break) of rehearsals for a new show and spring concert – also a “tune up” performance for inmates at the Hampshire County House of Correction.  As they board the bus for the latter, members learn that heart failure has taken one member, who’d been working on his duet part in hospital to the end. Before the big day a rapid recurrence of cancer of the blood takes a live wire front man.

Spirit, mortality and music are mixed together in that group of seniors – most of whom prefer classical or opera for “listening pleasure” but the director’s mix of rock and roll, punk and other contemporary music gets them moving and adapts well to the limits of aging voices (and bodies).  Minus the screaming amps, light show and physical contortions, a listener can actually get what the songs are about! (Even so a few ear plugs went in during rehearsals.)

I happened to see the film the same weekend that two other “eighties and going...” religious leaders were in the papers. Pope Benedict XVI was visiting the United States and the United Nations, where he called the fractious, warring nations of the world back to its tradition of human rights and peaceful resolution of differences.  He also reminded American Catholics that a shameful recent history is no excuse for deserting the gospel.

The same week brought the funeral for Krister Stendahl, former Dean of Harvard Divinity School, Lutheran Bishop of Stockholm, emeritus professor at Brandeis, major figure in local and international ecumenical circles engaged in Christian–Jewish dialogue, a mentor, teacher, friend and colleague to me for 44 yrs. Krister’s sharp wit and incisive critique of the worst habits of “churchy people”, probing intellect – Scripture never means what makes you comfortable he taught me at a young age – and deep love for the church remained to the end. His chosen funeral topic: we’re all being transformed into the glorious face of Christ. As the homilist put it, Krister’s just gone a step ahead of us.

NEWS

Pax Christi Metrowest

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 19th at 7 pm, Morse Institute Library, street level meeting room, East Central Street, Natick.

From the Prayer for the Decade of Nonviolence for Children, Mary Lou Kownacki, OSB.: “May my prayers rise with patient discontent until no child is hungry.” Prayer, of course, seldom needs to be in the form of words. In fact, our every breath taken in the love of Christ and all the children of God, is a prayer. “Feeding the hungry is a great work than raising the dead.” St. John Chrysostom.

St. Ann’s Church Wednesday Lunch Group

The Wednesday Lunch Group will meet on May 7th at 11:30 am. Come and meet Sister Mary Corripio, SND, Coordinator of Ethnic Ministries for the Archdiocese, and learn about her department’s mission. Please bring a brown bag lunch and a donation to the food pantry. Call if you plan to attend either Janet Testa 508-358-2934 or Jean Valone 508-358-3498.

The Rowen Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting Blessed John XXIII National Seminary is scheduled for Monday, May 19th at the Weston Golf Club. This charity event is held to benefit the educational program for the seminarians. Tuition covers only half the cost of educating a seminarian and the proceeds from this tournament will help bridge the gap and keep the cost of educating them affordable. The $250 player entry includes lunch at the club, 18 holds of golf with cart, and door prizes, followed by a social hour, silent auction, and dinner for each golfer and a guest at the seminary. To register, call Kate Folan at 781-899-5500 or visit www.blessedjohnxxiii.edu to print out a registration form.
