CHURCH DECORATIONS – SYMBOLS: Thanks to the Art & Environment Committee (Sandy Coy and Brenda Whitenett) for the Lenten decorations! The Lenten gospels determined what symbols they would use: sand and rock for the 1st Sunday, the mountain shape for the Transfiguration, the pitcher for the woman at the well, clay for the healing of the blind man, burial bands for the raising of Lazarus, and a plate to symbolize the hunger in the world and perhaps our giving. The empty font can remind us of the great gift of baptismal water and how we would be lost without it and help us appreciate it when it is returned at Easter. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR: Is a new program of the Wayland Clergy Association inviting members of Wayland’s congregations and the community at large to learn more about the various religious traditions represented in Wayland. Each month a different Wayland congregation will host a learning day when those who wish may attend a service followed by a time for conversation and questions with the representatives of the host congregation. The program began at First Parish this past Sunday. Future programs will be at Congregation or Atid on March 1st at 9:30 a.m., St. Ann’s on April 13 at 9 a.m., the Islamic Center on May 4, and Community United Church on June 8.
Financial Update The offertory collection for the first seven months of Fiscal Year 2008 (July 2007 through January 2008) amounted to $248,600. That amount is $2800 ahead of the budget for that time period. The offertory collection in the previous fiscal year was slightly less ($245,700) for the same seven month time period. The Finance Council is grateful to those families that are able to generously share their treasure with the parish community.
The offertory collection for the weekend of February 9/10 was $6595.00. Thank you for your gifts.

Music Ministry
This week marks the six month anniversary of my time here at St. Zepherin’s as Director of Music Ministry. It seems like only yesterday I was playing in the parish center and beginning to meet many of you in the sunny weather on the plaza after Masses! I continue to feel welcomed, supported, and appreciated…thanks to all of you!
Lent is a good time to look at where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we’re doing so in the process. It’s a good time to look at how and what we do in church, and how we might become more involved and engaged. As one involved in music ministry, I would invite you to consider what role music plays in your life in church. Are you actively involved in singing? Let me encourage everyone to come to church early to pray, to participate in our weekly music rehearsals before Mass, and then participate as fully as possible during Mass. Lent is a journey to Easter, and music can help accompany us on that journey. Music is always a source of comfort and encouragement to me in life…and I hope and pray it might be the same for you.
The Adult Choir resumed practices last week and will meet this Tuesday, February 19, at 7:00pm. Call, e-mail, or come talk with me if you’d like to sing with the choir. If you play an instrument and would like to play in church, please come talk with me.
See you in church! Kirk Hartung, Director or Music Ministry.

Aluminum Tab Collection to Benefit Shriners Hospital – We are asking all of our parishioners, young and old, to help us raise money for Shriners Hospital by saving your aluminum tabs from sodas and other cans. Save them at home in a container then bring them to church or the parish center with you to drop off in the large containers you will find marked for Shriners. This is an easy recycling project suggested by one of our fifth grade students, that anyone can do and will raise money for a wonderful cause. Children with burns, orthopedic conditions, and spinal cord injuries are eligible for admission at their hospitals and receive all care in a family centered environment at no charge- regardless of financial need. Shriners uses the money they make from selling the aluminum tops to buy everything from medical supplies and machines to toys and vans to transport children.
There are Lenten boxes available for donations to the Catholic Relief Services available in the Church.

SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1TITLES FOR JESUS
Several weeks ago the Tuesday morning Bible group arrived loaded for bear: You’ve got to explain why Jesus talks about himself as “Son of Man”. At the time, they had passages like “...so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath” (Mk 2:28) in view. Today’s gospel (Matt 17:1-9) actually uses two of the epithets or titles that early Christians gave Jesus. The divine voice speaking about him refers to “my beloved Son”, i.e. “Son of God”. Then Jesus says the disciples are not to speak about the vision, “until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
Readers unfamiliar with Biblical languages would think that the first means divine nature and the second means human. The first century audience would have heard something very different. Ancient kings often claimed that they had some form of divine ancestor. (Venus in the case of Julius Caesar and his descendants.) They also used heavenly signs to support their claims. So the Roman emperor’s coins and decrees and temple statues identified him as “Son of God”. Jews had Psalms in which God adopted David (and his descendants) as “Son”, and Christians used Psalm 2 as evidence for their view that Jesus was messiah, “Son of God”. So in all those cases, the “son of God” is a special human being, but not an immortal being. The king would die like others though it was often said that he was taken up to be with the gods.
The expression “Son of Man” is more complicated. It never shows up except in the gospels where the Greek represents an Aramaic phrase being used by Jesus. As an everyday idiom in Aramaic the expression is a way of saying, “a person, someone” or when a speaker indirectly refers to himself, “I”. When Jesus uses it in present tense statements, “the son of man is lord of the Sabbath”, that’s what he’s doing.
But in Aramaic the phrase “Son of Man” can also be shorthand for a vision in Daniel 7:14ff. The prophet sees an angelic figure in a human form, “one like a Son of Man” ascend to God’s throne. When that happens the judgment of the world will come and God’s kingdom will be established. That’s the meaning of “Son of Man” in today’s gospel. So both titles describe different aspects of Jesus’ relation to God. Pheme Perkins
